Immigrants that came to America between 1885 and1914 were seeking betters lives but had very little understanding of the country that they were going to relocate their lives. In the case of many immigrants earlier waves of their fellow countrymen (or women!) were already in America and helped them to make the transition to a new life.You are going to put yourself in the place of one of these experienced immigrants and write a letter back to your home country to try and encourage more members of your family or community to join you(or not come!). Your final letter will be FIVE PARAGRAPHS LONG and follow the format that I have provided. All research materials will be available to you and may choose many of the details in your letter on your own. The following writing guide must be used for this assignment. You will also include 3-5 pictures to illustrate your letter. All of the following details should be included in your opening paragraph. Finish your letter back to your native country by trying to convince someone else to either join you or stay home. Promote the benefits of immigration or warn your compatriots back home about the dangers of coming. Remember to summarize some of your key arguments from earlier in the letter to complete the task. Many people around the world, the statue symbolizes American freedom, hope and opportunity. This was a gift from the French republicans who wanted to advance their political cause. The New Immigrants, - Some 334,203 immigrants arrived in the United States in 1806. They all came to see the statue apparently to incarnate their own uplifting. Immigrants greatly increased after the American Civil War. They came because of there religion from Europe countries. The Chinese Exclusion Act, - most Chinese immigrants were barred from entering the Untied States. It was the nation’s first law to ban immigrantion by race or nationality. Federal law prohibited Chinese residents, no matter how long they had legally worked in the United States, from becoming naturalized citizens. Religious rebellions within China left 30 million dead and the country’s economy in a state of collapse. Contract Agreement, - During the 19th century, demand for manual laborers to build railroads, raise sugar on the Pacific Islands, mine precious metals, construct irrigation canals, and perform other forms of heavy labor, grew. Nominally free, these laborers served under contracts of indenture which required them to work for a period of time usually five to seven years in return for their travel expenses and maintenance. Immigration Restriction,- During the 9th and early 20th century, the United States imposed additional restrictions on immigration. In 1882, excluded people were likely to become public charges. This prohibited the immigration of contract laborers and illiterates, and all the Asian immigrants. Other acts restricted the entry of certain criminals, people who were considered immoral, those suffering from certain diseases, and paupers. United States's Changing Face, - The United States is at its highest level since the early 20th century. Some 10 million legal and undocumented immigrants entered the country durning the 1980s, exceeding the previous high nine million between 1900 and 1910. In 1996, nearly one in ten U.S. residents were born in another country, twice as many as in 1970.
